The officer was treated at the site by two off-duty first responders, according to Chief Thompson, before being taken to the hospital by crews, where he passed away from his wounds.

The officer’s name has not been made public by the police, but they have stated that the sergeant is a 22-year department veteran and a “loving husband, father, son, and brother.”

Authorities stated in the Blue Alert that the suspects fled the scene of the incident in a black Chevrolet Equinox with the NC tag KKA-4332, traveling west on 1-40 West.

Two men in their early to mid-20s were characterized as the two suspects in the car. One had on a black sweatshirt, black sneakers, and a black sweatshirt. The other had on a jean jacket, tennis shoes, and fur-gray sweatpants.

During the news briefing late on Saturday night, Chief Thompson made no mention of any arrests.
